…and will probably continue to be for a while:

Since the last weekend in February things have been a blur.  Unfortunately not so much in the “everything’s going so well and time is moving so fast” kind of sense, more the semi-conscious stupor kind of sense.

It all started with a night I couldn’t sleep on account of a lot of pain in my chest and upper abdomen that just would not go away.  I wasn’t nauseous but I threw up anyway, more than once.  By the time it was morning it was definitely time to go to the clinic.  I spent 4 days in the hospital and came home with no pain but no answers either.  The only clue was that there was no physical blockage but my liver enzymes were way out of whack.

Three weeks later it happened again.  I didn’t wait all night and went to the ER.  From here things are kind of fuzzy because I don’t remember which times were clinic and which were ER and what was prescribed when.  But for the last 2 1/2 weeks there’s been an episode almost every day and other things are cropping up.  Rather than put me back in the hospital or make me trek into the ER every time, my dr. gave me a narcotic nasal spray to kill the pain when it starts.  It’s sad – and expensive – how fast I burn through those little bottles.

The most recent theory is that either my esophagus or a liver duct or something in that region is having spasms, contracting so that it thinks there’s a blockage, but there’s nothing to be found on x-rays, ultrasound, or MRI (which, btw, I don’t recommend…the MRI, I mean).  I have an appointment with a GI specialist next Wednesday, so we’ll see what he says.

However, with the most recent symptom being incessant all-over itching, and the fact that the bruise from my lab work a week ago is still there, I’m pretty sure it’s some form of liver disease, rather than an esophageal malfunction.  But what do I know?  Only that my very brief perusal of the Google search “liver itching” uncovered the fact that persistent itching is a major sign of liver disease.  No, this is not me self-diagnosing some terrible thing that is going to kill me before I see the dr. next Wednesday; it’s probably nothing unusual at all but my money’s on some form of liver disease, that’s all I’m sayin’.

I don’t know what the GI dr. is going to say other than “lose weight and exercise”…well, duh.  That’s fine and dandy, and I *am* doing so, but it’s not an overnight process, hello.  So what do I do in the meantime?  Do I live for a year on Stadol and a prescription antihistamine, both of which render me zombie-like for a number of hours?  I don’t know.  I’m anxious to find out, and it’s going to be a long, itchy, sleepy week.

Thought you ought to know. *thunk*  (movie quote, carry on)
