Congratulations to Kandace (kandacebright@…) on winning the Yoplait prize pack from Yoplait and MyBlogSpark, chosen by “And The Winner Is”.

Kandace, I’ve sent you an email so look for it in your inbox.

Thanks everyone for entering.  I look forward to doing this again.

I do these shopping “tours” because I live 30 miles from the city, and while I’m far too used to driving there I’m really trying to do so less, especially with gas prices the way they are.  It makes for long, tiring days, but most of the time I think it’s well worth it.  This time was less than a week after the last tour, but there were some things that needed to be hit before sales changed.  I’ll start with the headline store, even though that wasn’t my first stop.

Petsmart
I’d like to preface this by saying that your mileage may vary with similar deals.  I got very, very lucky, and had a checker who gave me full credit for each coupon even when the sale price of the item was less than face value.  Some may argue the ethics of this, but I look at it this way: on the occasions on which I’ve pointed it out to the checker I’ve usually been told that it’s just easier and they like seeing people get great deals, and also that the store will be fully reimbursed for the coupon at face value regardless of what they sold the item for.  I know that some stores are more likely to do this than others, and any checker who wants to adjust for actual price I am happy to assist by recording the prices as I shop.  Anyway…

Last week disappeared in a bit of a blur and I think I only used about 1/3 of the planned menu.  I’ve got to work on that.  One thing that I think might help is to add a “thaw list” at the end of the menu.  Much of the reason that meals get skipped is that I haven’t remembered to thaw something in time.  Then I can take everything out of the freezer Monday (or Sunday night if I’m *really* on the ball – as if that would happen) and plan the order of the week by the thaw time and sensitivity of the ingredients.

Monday -
egg salad sandwiches (lots of eggs to use up)
enchiladas, made ahead for Chris to put in the oven while I’m at basketball practice (*shudder* cross your fingers)

Tuesday -
roast beef sandwiches
spaghetti & meatballs & garlic bread & salad

Wednesday -
bbq pork sandwiches & baked beans
shrimp & grits & asparagus

Thursday -
ham sandwiches
Ollieburgers & onion rings

Friday -
flatbread pizza
turkey & stuffing & cranberries

Saturday -
quiche florentine
chicken nuggets
ham & scalloped potatoes & broccoli

Sunday -
ham sandwiches
sausage & rice & snap peas
Thaw list -
ham
turkey breast
bbq pork
shrimp
meatballs

burger patties

MyBlogSpark has given me the opportunity to review Yoplait Original yogurt, and they’ve provided a prize pack for one of you for my very first blog giveaway!

Yoplait yogurt has long been a staple in my house for everyone young and…not so young.  Yoplait Original alone comes in 23 delicious flavors, ensuring a variety of tastes and preferences are covered.  Great taste is only one of the benefits of Yoplait Original.  Now it contains 50% of the RDV of calcium in one 6 ounce cup, twice the amount of the leading yogurt.

Busy lives and crazy schedules can make it difficult to ensure that all our daily nutrients are available to us.  Yoplait Original makes it easy to add more calcium to our diets, and it’s delicious at the same time.  Even better, the newest Yoplait Original also contains 50% of the RDV of vitamin D, which helps in the absorption of calcium.

Right now you can visit Yoplait on Facebook and “Like” them to receive a coupon for a free cup* of Yoplait Original yogurt as part of their one million cup giveaway (on the Welcome tab).  In addition, you can visit MyBlogSpark to print a coupon for $.75 off of any 4 cups of Yoplait yogurt.

MyBlogSpark and Yoplait are offering a gift pack to one of my readers, containing a coupon for a FREE cup of Yoplait Original yogurt, a duffle bag, a speed jump-rope, a water bottle, and a sport towel.  There are four ways to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post saying when you would (or do!) best like to add Yoplait yogurt to your diet.
  2. Tweet the following: “Enter to win a @YoplaitYogurt prize package from the very first giveaway by @abczoomom through 2/21/11. http://wp.me/p1me2v-l #myblogspark” and leave the link to your tweet in the comments below.  You can do this once per day for additional entries.
  3. Visit and “Like” ABCZooHome on Facebook and leave a comment on this post that you do.  Feel free to leave a comment on Facebook, but that will not count as an entry.
  4. Subscribe to ABCZooHome in your friendly neighborhood RSS reader, and yep, you guessed it, leave a comment here that you do.

You may enter in any or all of these ways through 11:59 pm Monday 2/21/11.  I will announce the winner sometime Tuesday and send an email.

*The free coupon is not valid in some states, namely California, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, North Dakota, and Tennessee.  Sorry guys.

MyBlogSpark on behalf of Yoplait provided me with the same gift pack the winner will receive as well as some information to help me write this post.  Everything I said here is in my own words and we truly do love Yoplait in my house.

My whirlwind tour of my favorite stores was so long, I broke the report into two posts.  I’ve already been to Sonic, Ihop, CVS, Academy Sports, Mrs. Baird’s, and Taco Bell – but I’m not through yet.

The big freebie score was at United.  I had hoped to only get free items when I was there just for the shock factor of the checker – I enjoy my shopping :) – but there was a long list of other things to get.  To spare you the minutiae I’ll highlight just the freebies and exceptional deals:

Back at home: Dollar General:
2 refill packages of Purex 3in1 sheets, $4 each, $1/2 coupon
4 boxes of Gain softener sheets, $2 each, 4 $3/1 coupons
I tried to tell the cashier that she’d have to adjust the Gain coupons, but she took it upon herself to scan them as is, and the register accepted $3 off for each one: $3 total

12 stops, half a ton of groceries, 3 meals, total cost as rung $903.98.  After coupons I paid $354.99, a savings of 60.73%.

Stay tuned: there’s another shopping tour coming up soon.

**Plum District is a daily deals site.  If you sign up through links on this page I get a bonus if you make your first purchase within 7 days – and so do you!

Through a combination of Facebook and other promos, strategically (honestly and sincerely) written letters to companies, survey offers, and prize wins or redemptions, I had a lot of free product coupons stacking up through the latter half of January.  I still have a dozen or so on the list that haven’t arrived yet.  I hoarded them for a while, wanting to go drop them all at once, just for fun.  Finally I couldn’t wait anymore – I’m not a patient person – and I took what I had and went a-shoppin’.  It wasn’t just the grocery store either; I was all over town with this one.  Unfortunately actual needs (and plenty of wants) crept onto the list so the total wasn’t nearly as dramatic as I’d hoped for, but I still had a lot of fun.  I’ll try to gloss over the long bits, but this will still be a two-parter, I can tell.

First stop, on the way out of town: Sonic, for a free iced tea.
Whoever dreamed up the survey promotion should get a medal.  For those of you not blessed with a Sonic or otherwise don’t know what I’m talking about, on random receipts a survey request will print.  When you call in and take the survey you get a code for a free 44oz drink.  My vice of choice has been vanilla Coke for a very long time, but I’ve been very, very good lately and switched to plain iced tea.  Yay me – and yay Sonic for the freebie.  $0

Second, breakfast:
Ihop has the same kind of receipt survey business going on, except it’s on EVERY receipt, and it’s a free short stack of pancakes.  If I were really doing this right, I would have had cash with which to leave a tip so I could just get the pancakes and be on my way.  But I didn’t, so I figured I should order something else in order to use my card and leave a tip that way.  And I was hungry.  Two eggs, toast, pancakes (yes, I see the redundancy of the toast and pancakes but I’m not using pancakes to soak up runny egg yolk), and more tea, plus tax and tip: $9.21

I know a lot of people are planning special menus and meals for Monday night. Eh. I typically don’t make a fuss about Valentines’ Day, unless maybe it’s a weekend and we go out, but even then it’s always so busy that it’s not really worth it. Maybe I’ll make brownies or something.

Anyway, this week’s menu looks remarkably like last week’s menu because, well, I didn’t really follow the menu. We ate out some (probably too much), and I got a really nice deal on some steaks mid-week so we had those for dinner one night while they were fresh, and in general I didn’t fuss about the menu. So with a few minor tweaks, here is menu plan, take 2:

Lunches:

tortellini salad
bbq pork sandwiches
cheesesteak sandwiches
flatbread pizzas
burritos
leftovers

Dinners:

pasta and meatballs (I won’t promise there’s spaghetti in the pantry)
scallops and lemon chicken
pot roast
sausage and rice
turkey breast and stuffing
ham and scalloped potatoes
shrimp and grits

Ack – this formatting is awful.  Will definitely have to work on this before next week.  Sorry about that.
